What To Expect from Individual Therapy Sessions

Attending therapy for the first time can feel daunting. You may have spent time searching for a therapist who not only offers the support you’re seeking, but also feels like someone you can feel safe and comfortable with. Perhaps someone you can open up to about things you may not have shared with anyone else.

With individual counselling, the first session is about getting to know each other. It’s a two-way process: while I learn more about you, it’s also an opportunity for you to get a sense of who I am and whether we feel like a good fit. During this initial conversation, we’ll talk about:

  • What has brought you to therapy and the challenges you're currently facing

  • How you would like things to be different

  • What you hope to achieve through therapy

Individual Counselling Sessions

This session is designed to be relaxed and supportive, helping to build trust and create space for you to begin exploring things with clarity and fresh perspective. From there, we’ll work together using practical tools and strategies tailored to your goals and what matters most to you.

Therapy isn’t just about what happens during our time together. I like to think of it a bit like learning a musical instrument—if you only ever play during the lesson, progress will be slow. The real change comes when you take what you’ve learned and apply it in your everyday life. In therapy, it’s the same. The insights, tools, and reflections we work through are most powerful when carried with you beyond the session.

Many people come to Pause You Counselling wanting to make meaningful change—whether that’s in how they manage stress, anxiety, overthinking, or emotions; in navigating people-pleasing or perfectionism; or in coping with burnout, relationship dynamics, or challenges at work. Others come seeking a greater sense of purpose, or a different way of showing up in the world.

By the end of your first session, my hope is that you’ll feel a sense of relief—a feeling that you’re in a space where you can truly be yourself and talk openly about what’s going on for you. Together, we’ll begin to create a plan that supports you in moving toward the life you want to live.

I hope this gives you a clearer picture of what to expect. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m here to help. If you are choosing an individual counsellor in Canberra, I hope this helps make it easier for you.
